Fair. Well deserved. That’s a reward for last year's performance.
Now the company wants to promote you to a managerial role.
More responsibilities. More accountability. People to lead. Bigger decisions.
But here’s the problem:
They’re still offering the same 20% hike.
So let’s ask the obvious question:
WHERE is the money for the NEW role?
You’re just being rewarded for last year’s output.
That’s not a promotion. That’s a free upgrade for the company
This is how you end up with two managers in the same org:
- One at 18 LPA
- One at 24 LPA
Same role. Same expectations. Big pay gap.
Promotions and Performance hikes are NOT the same thing.
(Read that again)
And if you still think salaries are confidential, ask the pantry staff. By lunch, they know what the intern, VP, and CEO earn in your organisation.
It’s not 2005. It’s 2025.
Respect the new role. Pay for the new role.
Don’t conflate a Performance hike with a Promotion.
-- People who take these “promotions” with only a performance hike are often the same ones asking for more money exactly after a few months because they jumped in too fast due to adrenaline and didn’t think about the extra responsibilities.

Folks who are about to comment, "It’s not always about the money.", "Isn’t experience in a managerial role itself a reward?" Ignore this post, and god bless you :)
