Here’s what I’m seeing:
→ Ahrefs looked at 300,000 keywords.
→ With AI Overviews, clicks drop by 34.5%.
→ That’s not a small dip. That’s 1 in 3 clicks gone.
Google says AI Overviews help send more traffic.
But the numbers don’t back that up.
I see the same trend on sites I manage.
Some pages lose 20–40% of their clicks overnight.
That hurts when you’ve spent years building up rankings.
Why is this happening?
→ AI Overviews answer the search right on the page.
→ Users don’t need to click through.
→ Even if your link is in the overview, you’re sharing space with many others.
Result?
More zero-click searches.
Less reward for great content.
Here’s what I’m doing to fight back:
1) Track which keywords trigger AI Overviews.
2) Focus on content that solves problems no AI can summarize in one box.
3) Build brand authority so people search for you by name not just by topic.
(The future of SEO is about standing out, not blending in.)
If you’re seeing your CTR drop, you’re not alone.
