India’s largest biscuit company sent me a legal notice. Why? In one of my videos, I highlighted that their biscuit contains 23% fat, of which 20 grams comes from refined palm oil.
This is my fifth legal notice. 🧑‍⚖️
But why did I make this video?
1. Because India is getting fatter like never before. As per the ICMR-INDIAB report, over 564 million Indians are overweight and obese. Women are more obese than men.
2. Even our PM recognized and in his address on the National Games declared Obesity as a big health risk for India. He also suggested reducing oil consumption by 10%.
3. Indian edible oil consumption has increased 3X in the last 4 years. F**k!!!
4. Average Indian consumes 2 kg of oil every month!!! 65 grams every day. This is at USD 2700 per capita. USA consumes 75 grams at USD 80,000 per capita.
5. Most of the increase in consumption is unhealthy and of poor quality (palm 43%, soyabean 22%, and sunflower 11%: 76% unhealthy).
6. High oil consumption is making India fat. Obesity is No. 1 lifestyle risk factor for death. Next is smoking. And no. 3? Vegetable Oil. That’s how serious it is. Number 3! Read. That. Again. PLEASE.
7. Major increase NOT in your kitchen. But inside your fridge and cupboard: Ultra-processed food (35% of chips are bad quality refined oil 40% of Bhujia is oil, 25% of biscuits are oil, 40% frozen dessert is oil, and even 25% of chocolate is oil). They are all now more accessible thanks to Zepto, Blinkit, Amazon and Flipkart. And not to forget the BOGO at supermarkets like DMart, Reliance, Nature’s Basket, More, and others).
8. Indians spend Rs 700,000 cr on outside food (50% unorganized aka street food). Accelerated by Zomato/Swiggy. Outside food is a double whammy. Both are high in quaantity of oil and poor in quality of oil.
Increased unhealthy and poor-quality edible oil consumption is the biggest health disaster India has witnessed. EVER! And we are surprisingly quiet about it.
Solution?🤔
1. It's time India declared Obesity as a disease like USA, Europe, Canada, Brazil, Portugal, and even Saudi Arabia.
2. Reduce chips, bhujia, Kurkure, frozen desserts, cheap chocolate.🍫
3. Don’t make Zomato, Swiggy, Zepto, Blinkit, Amazon, and Flipkart a habit.
4. Don’t fall for BOGO at Dmart, Reliance, Nature’s, More.
You are the CEO of your health. Behave like one.
In the meantime, this David has to rush to legally defend against the Goliath! Wish me luck.
