I came across a really intersting theory..
Devdutt Pattanaik points out that North Indian women get a daily workout rolling countless rotis—kneading, flipping, puffing—while South Indian women just toss rice in a pot, hit “start,” and suddenly have extra time to crack open a book or chase their dreams. Maybe rice isn’t just a staple food, but the original feminist life hack that quietly frees up time for education and outspokenness.
Who knew dinner prep could double as a social revolution?
Let’s go back to the time when men came back from work in a joint family and the woman of the house used to serve them food..
If you were a lady from north India, where they predominantly eat roti, women had to be in the kitchen making rotis one by one as the family demanded hot rotis..
But if you were from east or south India, where rice is the staple, the women can be dining with the men, not only were they listening to conversations but started sharing opinions and thoughts about it.. so if you look at a rice vs roti state, in spite of the common activity of serving food, rice state women have always expressed themselves more freely.
What is your take on this interesting theory?
