RIP Shopify developers. Thank you for your service. 🫡
If Claude and ChatGPT weren’t enough, Shopify just brought Sidekick directly into the design process.

Shopify just introduced Canvas.

Think of it like an infinite visual workspace for your entire store.

Every page is there. You can zoom out and see the whole experience, then zoom into a single button, section or product page and change it.

But the dangerous part for agencies and freelancers is Sidekick.
You can simply tell it what you want.
“Make this hero more premium.”
“Redesign my product page.”
“Change the style across the entire store.”

And you can watch the changes happen directly inside Canvas.
You can:
🎨 See all your store pages in one workspace
✏️ Click and edit elements directly
🤖 Ask Sidekick to make changes for you
⚡ See those changes happen in real time
📱 Preview different products, collections and screen sizes
🎬 Test real animations and interactions

For a small merchant who just wants a good-looking Shopify store, the question becomes:
Why hire someone for every little change if Shopify can increasingly do it for you?

Of course, larger stores will still need experts for custom functionality, complex integrations, performance, UX strategy, migrations and serious development.

But the basic “I build Shopify stores” service?

That market is getting squeezed very, very fast.

Canvas is still limited at launch.

No third-party Theme Store themes, Markets, translations, app blocks or app embeds yet, and themes edited in Canvas won’t receive normal theme updates.

But those feel like temporary limitations.

The direction is much more important.

Shopify doesn’t just want to give merchants better tools.

It wants merchants to need fewer people between the idea and the finished store.

And Sidekick is getting dangerously close.
