I tried ordering a UPI Lite from both. The difference was...
UPI Lite is India’s quiet fintech revolution! enabling lightning-fast payments without PIN entry for small-value transactions. And as more users adopt it, the onboarding screen becomes critical to drive trust and clarity.
So how do India’s top apps introduce UPI Lite?
Here’s a quick UX teardown of GPay vs. Paytm "The screen before you start using UPI Lite"
1) Paytm explains the feature using a benefit: “Fast payments without PIN.” GPay shows a limit instead: “PIN-free up to ₹500.” Paytm focuses on what the user gets, while GPay focuses on a rule.
2) Paytm uses a clear prompt: “Add money to UPI Lite,” which tells the user what to do next. GPay shows the name of the feature ~ “UPI Lite” ~ without guiding the next step.
3) Paytm shows a daily limit of ₹5,000, which helps users understand how much they can use the feature. GPay highlights only the ₹500 per transaction limit, which may feel more restrictive.
4) Paytm gives ready-made amount options like ₹100, ₹500 and ₹1,000, making it quicker to choose. GPay asks users to type in an amount, which can slow things down, especially for new users.
5) Paytm allows users to change their bank account on the same screen. GPay doesn’t offer this, which might be inconvenient for users with multiple accounts.
When you’re introducing a new financial feature, onboarding isn’t just about UI, it’s about confidence. And Paytm’s UX guides users with clarity, while GPay leans on minimalism.
