In 2022, of all Indians studying in West Asia, Iran was home to 11%. And just two years later, in 2024, that number soared to 19%!

- Means, from almost 1/10 to 1/5 Indian students in West Asia picked Iran. And this happened in a gap of just 2yrs

- Worse, during the same time, UAE and Israel, two of the West Asia’s most advanced and mature economies saw a drop in share

Together, those two accounted for 72% of all Indian students studying in West Asia, as of 2022. By end of 2024, that was down to 65%.

This also shows, that almost all the share gained by Iran came at the expense of Israel and UAE.

..

Think this way.

- Israel and UAE are home to some of the leading global institutions across medicine, engineering, biotech and more

- Plus, those are both very open and liberal societies, for both genders

Yet, something changed in last two years, with more and more Indians (and their parents) ditching them and going for Iran, which has quite a regressive regime (relatively), especially when it comes to women’s rights.

I just don’t get it. And I also could not find any answers anywhere.

What do you think can explain this shift?
