If you have an old AC, the government may now pay you to replace it...

The Ministry of Power is drafting an incentive scheme by which anyone with an old AC that is either older than 8 years, or has 3 star rating or lower... may be given an incentive to switch over to a 5 star rating AC...

Similar to the vehicle scrapping policy, the government does not want Indians to use old ACs that use more energy than needed...

With reduced energy consumption by switching to new ACs, it is expected that the running costs would reduce by over Rs 6000 per year purely in electricity expenses.

If you're considering getting an AC in the upcoming months, it may be beneficial to wait for the final policy to kick in.

The BSES Yamuna already has an AC Replacement Scheme on their website where new energy efficient AC from your favourite brand like Godrej, Lloyd, Voltas, LG, O General are said to be made available at more than a 50% discount in the exchange scheme.

The government may roll this out through other power distribution agencies across states where incentives would be in the form of -

Selling the AC to a recycler, who would give you a certificate that can be claimed against the purchase of a new 5 star AC; or

By exchanging your old AC with a new one at the time of purchase.

The objective is to manage increased power demand in the summer months, but what's concerning is that it is predicted that India may have a severe shortfall of ACs in the coming months.

I guess the winners would be folks who shortlist the ACs earlier, and are ready to purchase the moment the policy kicks in.

That's Climate Change, Consumerism, Capitalism and Public Policy in one.

Chuck ACs, I’ll probably need a city replacement scheme. Both Delhi and Dubai are unbearable in the summer.

Ideas for workation destinations for June?
