After a few weeks of hands-on use (and a fair bit of tinkering, as always), here’s my honest take—both strengths and trade-offs:
[1] Context Window that Actually Works
Perplexity’s context window is impressive—up to 30,000 tokens, nearly double that of ChatGPT’s standard model.
For someone like me who loves to go down research rabbit holes, this means the tool remembers more of our previous conversation and keeps the thread coherent.
That said, ChatGPT’s conversational flair and ease of use still make it my pick for quick brainstorming and creative sessions.
[2] Research and Reliability You Can Trust
One thing I appreciate: Perplexity integrates real-time web search and provides citations with its answers.
It’s a relief not having to double-check every fact, especially when the general hallucination rate for ChatGPT in knowledge tasks is cited at 15–20%.
This transparency is a big plus when you need to back up your findings (or just satisfy your own curiosity).
[3] Content Versatility for the Win
Perplexity handles a wide range of content formats—blogs, PDFs, even video transcripts—and supports at least 15 languages.
For someone who’s constantly exploring new topics and formats, this flexibility is a real edge. Still, for quick explanations or language tasks, ChatGPT remains a reliable fallback.
For context, ChatGPT is still the market leader with over 500 million users, while Perplexity is catching up fast at 22 million active users.
No clear winner here—just different strengths, depending on what you need.
As Andrew Ng put it, “ChatGPT is a fascinating technology that has the potential to transform the way we communicate with machines.”
Personally, I’m excited to see how both platforms keep pushing the boundaries.
