We always assume that metros like Delhi and Mumbai would have the highest rates of adultery, but the data from extramarital dating apps tells an entirely different story.
Gleeden is an app for extra-marital dating, and when they looked at their data, they found that the city with the most number of extra-marital affairs is actually Bangalore… followed by Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and Pune.
And if you thought metro cities have this Western culture, you wouldn’t believe how multiple studies suggest that people from rural India have more number of intimate partners than those in the metros.
The cities with the most growth of sign ups on Gleeden are from Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Patna – where these products are growing at 3X the rate of the metros.
As 60% of Gleeden’s users are reported to be from tier 2 and tier 3 India… it is believed that because people from such towns are more surrounded by joint families and social customs, they get more attracted to such products that give them a sense of breaking free from social norms…
And if you think this is just men, a survey from NHFS in 2019 showed that in 11 states of India, women had more intimate partners than men… where Rajasthan had the highest number of women who had on an average 3.1 sex partners as against the 1.8 for men.
I wouldn’t recommend it, but clearly, the largest market to build a dating app in India is for people in tier 3 India, aged between 30 to 45.
But I’d suggest we look at the issue more deeply…
There are seemingly a lot of people in unhappy marriages but continuing to stay with the family for societal reasons… or they’re just battling demons within themselves of loneliness or something that pushes them to engage in such endeavours.
There is a bigger need for businesses around ethical communities so that people feel loved by those around them, which could be friends or peers.
