I feel like a complete idiot. We've been ignoring this HUGE growth lever at Zoko (YC W21) for 3 years:

F*cking reviews.

We had 180 reviews on our Shopify app after 3 YEARS.

When we started actually asking for reviews, we got 60 in 2 MONTHS.

Now our conversion is spiking and customers are mentioning they chose us BECAUSE OF THE REVIEWS.

What everyone overlooks about reviews:

→ They're basically free testimonials that work while you sleep
→ People can smell fake 5-star bullsh*t reviews from a mile away
→ Genuine "this solved my exact problem" reviews are marketing gold

We've spent thousands on:

• Paid acquisition
• Email marketing
• Fancy dashboards

And yet, most of our customers come from referrals and reviews.

TAKEAWAY:

The basics still work:

1. Build something people actually want
2. Ask happy customers for reviews
3. Make it easy for them to leave those reviews
4. Watch your conversion rate climb

Remember when Amazon was actually useful because it had REAL reviews? That's what made it great.

Now, while companies are spending millions on "AI-powered growth," we're over here collecting real human opinions like it's 2005.

And it's working.

P.S. I've had "growth experts" reach out offering to sell us fake reviews.

Problem is: If you're playing that game, you're only fooling yourself.

Fake reviews might trick a few customers, but then what? Your product still sucks.

Now you've just got angry customers who feel scammed.

One customer told me last week: "I tried 3 other WhatsApp solutions before finding yours. Your reviews mentioned the exact problems I was having."

If you need fake reviews to sell your product, you don't have a marketing problem.

You have a product problem.
