2013.
I was working in recruitment.
Stable job. Steady salary. No drama.
Life was good…
Then my mum rang.
“Your brother’s starting a business. Go help him.”
Absolutely not.
He was in a band with a mate called Joe (we called him Davo).
Nice guys.
Zero chance of success.
I said no.
She guilt-tripped me.
I caved.
Day 1 at the office:
→ My brother didn’t come in (was on holiday)
→ Davo rocked up at 11am
→ WTF have I done?
12 years later, I’m still here.
Now Head of Ops at fatjoe.
We’ve scaled past £10M with a lean, async-first team.
I’ve helped build the systems that made it happen.
And I love it.
I didn’t have a 10-year plan.
Didn’t chase titles.
Just thought I’d help out the Joes for a bit.
And that led to the biggest opportunity of my life.
Lesson? Don’t overlook the tiny, chaotic doors.
They sometimes open into something brilliant.
What daft decision accidentally shaped your future?
