Dishoom is the story of 2 brothers who’ve truly taken Indian culture to the world—a dream I had when I started Dr. Vaidya's by RPSG Group.
The business was started in 2010 by Shamil Thakrar and Kavi Thakrar.
Dishoom is one of the UK’s top brands, serving 50,000+ customers weekly. It’s not just among the Indian diaspora—everyone loves it.
The story started with a small observation.
In 2008, representations of Indian culture in British life were tired and clichéd. Plus, the market either had extremely premium Michelin-star Indian restaurants or local curries and buffets. Nothing in between!
In the UK, South Asians are one of the largest ethnic minority groups, and so, everyone is familiar with the food.
So, they launched this chain inspired by Bombay's iconic Irani cafés—cutting chai and Parle G biscuits in the prime real estate of London.
Since then, they’ve developed a cult following for both food quality and immersive experience. But I feel the impact goes beyond numbers.
Each dish comes with a story, each location designed as a unique tribute to its Indian heritage. The walls are laden with old film posters. It’s about the small things.
They started the movement that cultural authenticity is not a compromise; it’s a strength. This excites me about India's next decade.
Our culture is now cool globally. Yoga, spices, tea, food, and Ayurveda—we're not just exporting cheaper products anymore; we're exporting experiences, culture, and values.
If you’re a brand building something traditionally Indian, think about global markets. There’s a massive opportunity there.
Ever tried Dishoom? Feel the same way?
