Claude AI provider Anthropic says it might owe $750 BILLION in copyright damages should book authors’ class action succeed

5 million books times $150,000 in maximum statutory damages for willful infringement. But the court wouldn't drive Anthropic out of business. And the tobacco class action that resulted in a 1998 settlement with a floor of $206B (closer to $400B today) wasn't dismissed on quantitative grounds either.

Among the dozens of AI copyright cases pending worldwide (most of them in the U.S.), Bartz v. Anthropic is one of the more interesting ones.
