Are we in denial? Is the white-collar bloodbath already in motion?

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei just gave the most honest assessment I’ve seen from someone actually building the tech that could displace millions of jobs.

According to him, AI could wipe out 50% of entry-level white-collar roles—with unemployment spiking to 10–20% in just a few years.

And as much as I’d love to stay optimistic (or in denial), I don't think he’s entirely wrong.

We’re racing toward a future where agents—AI that doesn't just augment, but actually does the job—will replace junior developers, marketers, paralegals, coordinators, analysts, and entry-level knowledge workers en masse.

“You can’t step in front of the train and stop it,” Amodei says. “The only move that’s going to work is steering the train...but we have to do it now.”

I’m not panicking. But I am paying attention.

Because AI is a double-edged sword. It will revolutionize fields like healthcare and education, while disrupting entire swaths of the workforce.

So, rather than deny or panic, here’s where we CAN focus:

➡ Upskill now—learn to work WITH AI tools in your field.
➡ Double down on uniquely human skills—creativity, emotional intelligence, strategic thinking.
➡ Build adaptable career paths—diversify your skill set beyond what AI can easily replicate.
➡ Support workforce transition policies—we need safety nets for this shift.

This moment calls for responsibility in addition to innovation. The speed and scale of what’s coming will determine whether we get a renaissance or a reckoning.

Let’s not wait until it’s too late.

What's your take on this sobering view of AI and society? (Full article in comments.)
