Yes you heard that right !
Why?
Apple is planning to integrate Gemini,
Googles own generative AI into iPhones
And this is the fee Apple could potentially pay Google as reports suggests .
This is huge, but why isn’t Apple building its own AI?
Well, they are trying.
They have acquired a bunch of AI companies,
They shut down Apple car project completely after spending billions in last 10 years
And moved all their AI talent into building LLMs
They also had an internal product that was being tested by Apple users called Ajax
But basically it sucks
It isn’t good enough yet to be part of the iPhone
And if Apple launches something with inferior AI you would know what would happen
And off course Apple doesn’t have the liberty to take their own time to build it like in other cases
AI is evolving rapidly and expectations of consumers is changing
If Apple doesn’t do something about this quickly. They could lose market share to android.
They also ended up spending a ton of money on Siri
But never were able to make it good enough for people to even respect it.
Now, the big question,
Why is Apple considering Google over OpenAIs GPT models ?
Well, looks like they did consider.
But talks with Google have gone deeper.
Here is why I think they would chose Google over OpenAI
Google built a model which is specifically designed for mobile phones,
It’s called Gemini nano
And it works locally on the phone which makes it incredibly fast and more importantly your data is with you.
It already is live on pixel phones and Samsung phones and it works brilliantly well.
Also, Google already pays Apple billions to make Google as the default search engine on safari.
So this could be a great extension into the partnership and probably can get a better price too 😉
As the news leaked, Google share price surged over 7%
Any Google stock holders here ? Haha
Anyways it’s going to be interesting to see how this pans out,
I am personally excited about this integration.
Can’t wait to see Gemini on iPhones.
What are your thoughts?
