NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is likely to put a blanket ban on procuring telecom supplies from Chinese companies in state-run telecom Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), a DoT source said.
"It is being decided to avoid Chinese companies from supplying equipment, parts, and components for fourth-generation or 4G networks proposed to be deployed by BSNL and MTNL," the person privy to the matter said.
Earlier in the day, a BSNL senior official told ETTelecom that India-China skirmish is a strategic matter involving national security, and whenever the state-owned company is asked by the Centre to shun gear supplies from Chinese ZTE, the telco would comply soon.
The development has come after heightened tension between the two companies leading to the killing of as many as 20 Indian soldiers in Galwan Valley in Ladakh, and such an action is likely to adversely impact Shenzhen-based ZTE's India business which maintains six circles for the state-run telco being its largest customer.
