There are two distinct philosophies when it comes to internships.

One school of thought is that the interns are providing a service to the
organization, hence should be compensated through a stipend.

The other school of thought is that the organization is investing management
bandwidth in training the interns, who come in with very raw skills, and it is
an extension of their education. So, they do not need to provide a stipend, but
can issue an experience certificate and letter of recommendation.
