International Mother language Day
International Mother Language Day is a global observance held annually on February 21st. The day was first proclaimed by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
The main objective of International Mother Language Day is to promote and protect linguistic and cultural diversity and to encourage people to recognize the importance of their mother language. The day also commemorates the Language Movement of 1952 in Bangladesh, where students were killed while protesting for their right to speak their mother language, Bengali, in addition to Urdu, the official language of Pakistan at the time.
Each year, UNESCO selects a theme for International Mother Language Day. Some past themes have included "Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education," "Languages and Multilingualism for Sustainable Development," and "Quality Education, Language(s) of Instruction and Learning Outcomes."
International Mother Language Day is an opportunity to celebrate and honor the diversity of languages and cultures around the world and to recognize the importance of preserving and promoting linguistic diversity for the benefit of all.
